I ventured out into the world to show you my newest song, 'Sail Without Wind.' I got tired of the studio background and wanted to mix it up a little bit, so I brought my recording devices and a couple of cameras and hit the streets. Just so you know, the music that you hear is me playing live. I did not prerecord this song and overdub it while I sat there lip syncing. The microphone we brought just does an amazing job.

Thanks to my good friend, Nathan Donaldson, for being the camera man. He is a songwriter as well and I will be sharing a link to one of his new songs very soon.

The art for "You've Got Something"

One of the great things about my relationship with Archetype Records is their willingness to trust me with the artwork associated with my music. Being a designer and an illustrator it would have been very hard to release the reigns and have some else design the artwork that may fail to meet my expectations and vision.

The artwork shown above will be the digital cover you will see should you download my first single when it is available. The single will precede the album and have approximately three songs that accompany it, that may or may not be on the full album.

I researched a lot of old rock 'n roll concert posters from the 60's and 70's before creating this cover. In the same way that I feel that not as much time and attention are put towards lyrics and songwriting in today's music, I feel that not as much focus is put on cd artwork as well. So by diving into all of these old posters I surrounded myself with the art that I felt like conveyed a message - even if you do not know at first what that message is - and even if that message is different to everyone that looks at it.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this artwork, thanks in advance for any feedback.

'Live From Music City' is a show on blogtalkradio.com that focuses on the inner workings of the music industry. In order to give a broad perspective to their listeners about what goes on behind the big curtain in Nashville, their guests include producers, videographers, sound engineers, as well as recording and performing artists.

My appearance aired live last night, June 29th, and I was the second guest following the very knowledgeable and experienced song publisher Shar'n Clark.

In my interview we covered how I approached the hosts in order to be featured, what inspired me to become a songwriter, how I got the idea for my 'One Dream' music video, and my unique recording arrangements.

The hosts of the show, David Bowers and David Lowry, could not have been more supportive of all the hard work I have put into my fledgling career. After I film my video I will definitely have to get back in touch with the guys at LFMC and do a follow up interview.

I will be the featured musical artist this week on 'The Film Vault' podcast. For those of you who don't know what a podcast is, here is a quote from wikipedia:

'The Film Vault' is a podcast that focuses on movie reviews and trivia. 2) I have been asked to play at 50's and Fiddles again this Saturday from 6:30 to 9pm. For all my local friends I know this is last minute, but they had a band cancel and I am helping them out. So come make the best of it and listen to me play every song I can think of in 2 and a half hours.

"One Dream" What I plan to do with my guitar and unicycle...

In an attempt to gain internet celebrity status, promote my new album, and help my hometown's '200 Fest' get more exposure I am going to film myself riding a unicycle (while playing the guitar and singing at the same time) for a music video to the song 'Beautiful Brick.'

Where do I plan to do this? Shelbyville is having an arts festival in July, and I am in talks with the event coordinators to see if I can film my music video while this is going on. The square where this is taking place will be blocked off to traffic, and having a bunch of people in the background would make it even better. Here is the basic breakdown of what I want to accomplish.

Shoot one continuous shot of me riding the unicycle while playing the song (the full 4 and half mins of the song)
Let the camera record me from a tripod setup in the back of an car or truck
Get everybody at the festival who wishes to participate to follow walking behind me once I ride by them
Pass all the major landmarks on our cute little town square in the process (thanks to the route I've mapped out)
Attempt to create a local buzz in the preparation of this promotion (local papers and tv stations) to help draw people to the filming
Create a national buzz via the finished product: a viral video that showcases what happens with hard work, creativity, and support from your community

The idea may sound hokey, but watch the promo video. Once you see me ride with the music overdubbed I think you will want to be a part of this. I might even try to film a documentary about this idea, and I will have a site devoted to information about this very soon. With more videos and maps and information. So keep an eye out!

This past Sunday I was on the front page of my local paper, the Shelbyville Times Gazette. The story was written by Suzanne Lamb as a human interest piece about my different creative accomplishments, but primarily focused on my album release party to take place at a local venue.

Because of the article, the show on Monday went great. I played to a packed house and sold tons of merchandise. The other interesting part to this, however, is every where I go in town now somebody recognizes me.

Best example of this: Today I was walking to my bank on the square and a car slowly stalked me then pulled into a parking space in front of me. The driver said, "Excuse me?" I turned to see if the lady was talking to me before answering "Yes?" After pausing a minute to confirm something with the two friends in the car with her she replied, "Are you that guy that has that new album out that was in the paper?" I smiled and said, "Yes ma'am." She proceeded to congratulate me before driving off.

There it is. My first taste of small-town fame. I haven't been to Wal-Mart since the story has come out, and I have to be honest, I'm a little afraid to go.

Songs for the Sirens - Album Release Party

For all my hometown friends and family, I'm inviting you to come celebrate my new album. I will be performing with accompaniment at 50's and Fiddles (beside the Capris Theater in Shelbyville) on April 12th from 6:30 to 7:30.

If you have never been to 50's and Fiddles, they have a very unique back stage that is designed to make you feel like you have walked right onto the set of a Country/Western movie. They have great food and ice cream, and servers will be on staff to assist you.

I am going to play all 13 tracks off the new album in the order they appear on the cd. It will be very laid back, acoustic, and intimate, and for each song I will be able to give a little back story on the recording and/or writing of the song.

Daniel Shearon will be playing some lead and rhythm guitar for me and Sara Beechum will be singing back-up as well as playing the keyboard.

"Songs for the Sirens" Review

A little while ago, I had a chance to review a CD from Shelbyville, TN’s own Chase Perryman. I ended the review by saying that I thought he would be around for awhile. Time will prove whether that is right or wrong, but he returns with a disc that is stronger than his first. And, that’s what you want to shoot for when you’re trying to make a name.

His style is very much on the Rock / Blues side, and he mines that quite well. His vocal is very much up front and center, and very reminiscent of Joe Cocker, especially on “Miss Havisham.” Then, at times, there’s a definite Clapton influence, but he does each without sounding like either of them, which most artists could take a lesson from.

All along this album, Perryman shows his continuing maturation as an artist, and I think that SONGS OF THE SIRENS is going to be an album that gets some well-deserved attention. Get on the bandwagon….It’s going to be leaving the station soon!

I've entered a soundtrack competition for an independent movie with my song, 'Restless Passenger.' The song submission/voting goes as follows:

I was given stills from the movie from which to assemble a youtube video, incorporating my song as the background music
They (Day Four) then add my video to their youtube playlist with the other song submissions
Next they pick the songs for their soundtrack whose videos have the highest rating, most views, and most comments.

Wednesday of this week is the last day to vote (ie rate it on youtube, view it, or comment), so I need your help! Click on the picture above to help a brother out.

I've been invited to perform at Nashville Music Group's live recording of their weekly radio show. The show airs on Sundays, and I will be informed of the date to tell everybody to listen online after the recording of the live show.

I will be performing a few songs off the new album, and James Breedwell (the host) will ask me some questions about my music and my album at the show. After the taping, my studio versions will replace the live versions, but your clapping and audience participation will be kept in tact.

This a great opportunity for me, and Nashville Palace is a cool place, I'd love it if you can come and route me on. There will be other songwriter's performing songs as well, so you will get to listen to different types of music and I will be able to mingle with you after or before my set.

Lots of New Shows

Very quickly, I have a lot of new shows to tell you guys about. Most of these are songwriter's showcases in which I perform with other songwriters. Two notes of interest however, the February 4th show, and the March 16th show are both 30 minute shows. So you'll get to experience 5 or 6 Chase songs, as opposed to the usual 2 to 3. Take a look at the widget below, and share it for others to view as well.

Songwriting Spotlight - Writing in Clusters

When I'm in an inspired mood I typically will write two to four songs at once. It's my way of truly diving into a theme or emotion. Once I have written a couple of songs, there may only be one that I feel a connection with and I feel like pursuing, but in a lot of cases that song may be the third song I write... the other songs helped me get to it.

For the songs below I have purposefully focused my energies on these elements:

Writing an intro. I rarely write intros for songs. It's a step not always necessary and one that I skimp on a lot of time, so for the creative challenge I made sure to write one for each of these three songs
Singing in a lower octave. When I start off singing low then go high (or vice versa) it creates a powerful, dramatic contrast in the energy of the song.
Interesting chord progressions. I wanted to find chord progressions that were interesting enough on their own, even if I wasn't singing.
Very intentional, specific word choice. Rock is a genre in which you can float all over the place with your words. It doesn't have to tell a story, but rather create a mood. My goal for these three songs however was to decide what I was trying to convey and be deliberate about my word choice. After writing the songs in the first draft I went back with a fine tooth comb and weeded out any phrases or obscure references that I did not think carried the overall message of the song.

Now for the songs. Please let me know which of these songs you like the best. Which had the best words? Which was the most catchy and memorable? Which one moved you more?

Last night was a great night to perform. I thought the rain would have kept people away, but actually there was a nice crowd. Instead of playing on the stage they set us in the middle of the room in a circle; four of us in a round. It was nice and intimate.

The first song I performed was written for a great friend of mine, and a huge supporter of my music. Thanks Lindsey for all that you do for me, and for sending everyone you can my way because you believe in my music. It means a whole lot to me.

My good friend and co-worker, Daniel, has been kind enough to help me on the mixing of my album. Therefore his daughter Katelen has been exposed to my songs unwillingly. In the process she has become a fan of my music. And like any good fan she wants me to do better, that is why she wrote me a song. It was given to me by way of pink construction paper. Cold Lies Preview

I've been working on my home studio; the latest addition being a nice little midi keyboard. I picked 'Cold Lies' as a song I could test run, play around with piano, bass, and strings a little bit. I think its coming together pretty nicely. Daniel (my sound engineer) has been assisting in the mix and on guitar. He's quite good on guitar, and we are both getting better at mixing.

Daniel sent me a link today about a songwriting/band competition in Nashville. The only problem was the deadline was today. So even though the song is not complete, I thought it would be better to enter something, than nothing at all.

Aside from a little more mixing, I'm going to work on adding some harmony vocals in places with another singer, as well replace the looped drums with my own drumming. Just as soon as I finish trading out my live set for a USB studio set.

Playing at Cafe Coco

This is the second time I played at Cafe Coco. The host's name is "24/7", he does an awesome job on levels and on managing the overall attitude of everyone. This a really fun place to play. Once I get ready to play out more (have a cd I can sell etc) I'm going to have to see how I can play here on another night with 1 hour set.

The videographer is a 21 year old young man from Germany. He and his dad have planned a trip to America every since he was little. They are going around finding places with live music in Nashville, and are headed to Memphis for the forth. If you are reading this, thanks again.

This song has interesting origins. I was feeling lazy one day, and I needed to get up and do some cleaning. My daughter, Hannah, was playing with a little karaoke machine that has recording and playback functions. She came over to me and wanted me to sing something into it. Off the top of my head I sang, "I need some motivation, I've got to clean the house a little."

I eventually did get up and clean a little. And then like a week later I was putting toys away and I pushed the playback button on Hannah's karaoke machine and heard myself singing, "I need some motivation, I've got to clean the house a little," again. This time I thought, hey that's kind of catchy.

I sang the line off and on for the next couple weeks and once I changed the words to, "I need some motivation, I've got to move my bones a little," the whole song opened up and I finished writing it. Based on its origin, I didn't let the song take itself too seriously. Which is evident in lines like "God made dirt and dirt don't hurt." I have a lighter side, I swear.

At the Hall of Fame Lounge

Jimmy was nice enough to join me (at the last minute) to go play some songs at the Hall of Fame Lounge in Nashville. I have been missing playing in front of people, and until I can get the full band practicing and in routine I think I will continue to hone my song writing and performing skills at writer's nights, coffee shops, etc.

We showed up early enough to catch two rounds of performers. And it took a while before I realized what the format was. It goes like this:

You have three chairs, three mics, and three inputs on the stage. Three different song writers take a seat. The writer to the left goes first, then the guy in the middle, then the guy on the end. You repeat this process three times. Each of you have a guitar, and are welcome to play along with the other performer's songs.

So when we went up I sat Jimmy to the left of me, and he played cello. He would play around a little when the other guys were playing, but not I of course. And one of the guys played along with Jimmy and I when we did our songs. It was very interesting.

All of the music that was performed besides our own could be considered country on some level, alt. country, country blues, or just blues. And Jimmy and I were easily the youngest people there. So given our attire, age, and set-up (cello and guitar) I think we had them all curious as to what we would come out with. And I believe (to put in Murphy Small's words, the first performer in our round) they were pleasantly surprised.

All of the musicians there were great song writers and excellent guitar players, it was Nashville is all about.
